Making Mother’s Day Gifts

Using your crafting skills to create a beautiful keepsake gift for Mother’s Day says so much more than any words written in a card. The time and effort poured into creating your gift is sure to make any mother feel very special. It is not only those with small children who appreciate a handmade card and gift from their offspring, mothers of grown-up families love them too.

Photo Album Gift Ideas

Mini books and mini albums are great for giving as gifts and can be on any subject. They don’t have to be filled with photos; you could source some suitable quotes and handwrite them or type them in your chosen font and print. Be sure to include the name of the person you are quoting. There are books of quotes that you cut out and rub-ons available too, which you may prefer to use. You could use a mixture of photos, quotes and embellishments to produce a beautiful album that will be looked after and enjoyed for many years to come.

Mother’s Day Vase Presents

If you are giving flowers to your mum on Mother’s Day, why not decorate a vase to display them in too? Have in mind the size of bouquet you are likely to buy when choosing your vase as your flowers will look lost in a vase that is too big and won’t fit in one that is too small.  Ensuring that your vase is thoroughly clean and dry, apply peel-offs designed for glass painting or liquid outliner to create a pattern then add colour using glass paints. The outliner and paint should be applied to the outside of the vase. When placed on a bright, sunny windowsill the effect is stunning. This is one vase that won’t be kept at the back of a cupboard!

Photo Storage Boxes

Use your scrapbooking skills to create an unusual gift that is sure to be displayed in a prominent place and enjoyed every day. Using a template, mark out a square box on cardstock, cut out using sharp scissors or a craft knife and score along the folds. Choose photos for the top and four sides of the box together with background papers and embellishments, if there is room. Loosely construct the box and note where the top and bottom squares will be when the box is put together. Use a pencil to do this and write as softly as possible. Flatten out your box again and decorate each panel ensuring the side panels will be the right way up when the box is glued together. Don’t worry about the backs of brads or eyelets as they will not be seen when the box is finished.  To personalise your gift even further, handwrite a message or piece of journaling on a tag or mat of cardstock and fix it to what will be the bottom panel of the box using double-sided tape. This panel of the box must be flat, or otherwise the box will be unsteady.  Finally, apply double-sided tape to each tab on the box but do not remove the top layer of paper from the tape until you’re ready to stick that tab in place. Stick the sides together first then finish with the top (or bottom, depending where your last flap is).

Making a Mother’s Day card which co-ordinates with your gift not only provides a unified look, it’s also a great way to use up those scraps! Why not try making tags, or using off cuts to build up a quilted look.
