Mum's Recipe Book

This project was created using some great new products from Zutter. The Bind-it-All has been used to fasten the decorated chipboard covers and die-cut pages with top quality, metal, O-ring bindings. This idea behind this book is to create a beautiful keepsake gift for a mum, aunt, gran or other special lady in your life to say ‘Thank you’ for all the wonderful things they have done.

Co-ordinated pages

Using the scrapbooking papers and embellishments in the Prima 12 x 12 Coquette Scrapbooking Kit, some purple Gem Brads and 7Gypsies rub-on transfers, decorate both covers and set aside. Decorate the inside pages using these same papers and embellishments to give a co-ordinated look throughout your book, creating pockets on each right hand page to hold a tag with the recipe written on it. Carefully measure, mark and punch the holes ready for binding on each cover and all the inside pages before binding with your Bind-it-All. Finish by writing a message or dedication to the intended recipient and attaching this to the front or back inside cover.

You Will Need…

Toolbox Essentials…

1. Cut two 8” x 8” pieces of roses paper. Using strong paper glue, adhere each piece to the outside of the front and back covers, allowing approximately 1” overhang around all four edges. Snip the corners off and score all the way around each cover before folding over the excess paper and sticking down. This ensures a neat edge, especially as the papers are cardstock weight. Adhere a page blank to the inside of each cover.

2. Cut a piece of ‘Tawdry’ paper (using the design on the reverse of the double-sided paper) to measure 2.5” and adhere onto the reverse of a piece of ‘Trinkets’ paper and trim to leave a small border. Mount this, a little off-centre, to the front cover.

3. Pair up large and small felt blooms from the Prima Coquette Scrapbooking Kit, in different colours, and secure together using a purple Gem Brad. Use Gem Brads of different sizes to finish a few single flowers, too. Choose two double flowers and a single to adorn your front cover and attach using strong glue. The other flowers will be used throughout your book to embellish your pages.

4. Cut a piece of ribbon to measure 6” and set aside until you’re ready to bind your book. Use rub-on transfers to write ‘Mum’s Recipe Book’ and embellish with the small flower and tape measure designs.

5. Cut enough 4” x 4” pieces of cream cardstock to make a tag for each of the right hand pages in your book. Also cut enough 4.5” x 5.75” pieces of paper to make pockets for these tags, using the decorative papers in the scrapbooking kit. Punch or cut a semi-circle in the top of each pocket and adhere to the inside pages using a line of double-sided sticky tape around both side edges and the bottom. Your tags can be decorated with embellishments from the kit before tucking inside the pockets.

6. Decorate the pockets and remaining pages of your keepsake gift book with cut, torn and punched papers together with felt flowers, ribbon, brads and handwritten journaling spots. The 7Gypsies rub-on transfers can also be used to adorn your pages. If you are writing the recipes yourself, you might like to add a title on each page, so the recipient knows where to find each recipe, before hand-writing your recipe on the cardstock tag. If you are leaving the tags blank to be filled in after you have given the book as a gift, you could leave the journaling strips blank too.

7. Ensure the pages of your book are in the correct order and the right way round (the inside pages are not a perfect square!). Measure and mark where the covers and inside pages should be punched before punching with your Bind-it-All Machine.

8. Lay the 6” piece of ribbon you cut in step 4 over the punched holes in the front cover, lining up the holes in the crochet-style ribbon with the holes in the cover. Carefully thread your binding wire through all the pages and covers, catching the ribbon too and ensuring the seam will be on the inside back cover, and bind using your Bind-it-All Machine.

9. Finally, add a message or dedication for the intended recipient. Cut a piece of cream cardstock and hand-write your message for that truly personal touch.
