Embossing
Dry embossing is the term used to describe the raised effect in paper or light cardstock which is achieved using a brass or plastic stencil and an embossing stylus. Heat embossing is an entirely different technique and uses special powders applied to wet ink which are then gently heated using a heat tool until they melt. Once the molten powder cools it forms a raised surface.
